GitHub

Create and link GitHub issues right from the ticket

About this App

Connect GitHub to SparrowDesk and your team can create a GitHub issue from a ticket or link an existing one, attach the customer’s screenshots and videos, and see the issue’s current status in the ticket sidebar. No more copying tickets into GitHub by hand, and engineers get the files they need with the issue.

With GitHub connected, your team can:

  • Create a GitHub issue from a ticket, with a repo, title, description, labels, assignees and attachments
  • Link an existing GitHub issue by pasting its URL or searching your selected repos
  • Link every ticket that reports the same bug to one issue
  • See each linked issue’s repo and number, title, status, assignees and labels in the ticket sidebar
  • Unlink an issue from a ticket, while the issue stays on GitHub

Good to know:

  • Account Owners and Admins only. Only these roles can connect GitHub and work with issues on a ticket. Agents don’t see the GitHub section.
  • Nothing is sent automatically. GitHub gets only what you type or attach, with no ticket link and no customer details.
  • One author for every issue. Issues created from SparrowDesk show the person who connected GitHub as the author.
  • Public repos come with a warning. SparrowDesk warns you before creating an issue in a public repo, since anyone can see it.
  • GitHub Enterprise Server isn’t supported. Neither is GitHub with data residency.
  • Disconnecting removes every link. All issue links are removed from every ticket. Issues on GitHub aren’t deleted.

How to enable this integration?

You’ll need the Account Owner or Admin role in SparrowDesk, a Starter, Professional or higher plan, and a GitHub account with access to the repos you want to use. The integration isn’t available on the Free plan. If your GitHub organization blocks third-party apps, an organization owner must approve SparrowDesk before its private repos appear.

  1. In SparrowDesk, go to Settings → Apps
  2. Find GitHub and click Connect
  3. Sign in to GitHub when prompted
  4. Choose the personal or organization repos SparrowDesk can use
  5. Confirm to finish

Once connected, the GitHub section appears in the sidebar of every ticket. SparrowDesk can only reach the repos you select.

Key features and benefits

Create issues without leaving the ticket. Choose a repo, check the title (filled in from the ticket subject), and add a description, labels, assignees and attachments. The issue is created on GitHub and linked to the ticket.

Screenshots and videos that go with the issue. Attach up to 10 files, up to 10 MB each, in PNG, JPEG, GIF, SVG, MP4, MOV or WebM. Images and videos show inside the issue, at the end of the description.

One issue, many tickets. When several customers report the same bug, link each ticket to the one issue your engineers are already working on.

Issue status in the ticket. SparrowDesk fetches the latest details from GitHub every time you open the sidebar. Status shows as Open or Closed, and closed issues show why: completed, not planned or duplicate. Update the customer without opening GitHub.

You choose the repos. SparrowDesk can only reach the repos you select, and you can change them in Settings → Apps → GitHub. Connecting, disconnecting and changing repos are recorded in the audit log.
